Since many legal terms are derived from a Latin root word, the dictionary provides pronunciation assistance for these terms.  In addition, the applicable entries contain pronunciation transcripts equivalent to those found in North American lawyers or physicians. The complete bibliography lists the more than 1,000 classics of legal literature that are briefly cited in the dictionary to broaden the user`s understanding of legal terminology. Each of the more than 6,000 quotes finds a critical and otherwise difficult explanation to find for the terms discussed. Keywords get their data from the first known use in English-language sources, giving dictionary users a better idea of the historical context. Black`s Law Dictionary is the only legal dictionary that provides such data. First of all, the articles can be very useful as a general introduction to a new area of law for you. They offer more detailed information than a legal dictionary and are at the same time almost as accessible and easy to use. The 11th edition, with new documents on every page, is also the most practical, comprehensive, scientific and authoritative legal dictionary ever published.
With clarity and rigor, it defines more than 55,000 words and expressions related to law and records their historical and contemporary nuances. This issue introduces 3,500 new terms, including responsibility, forward-looking self-defense, cyberviolence, Islamic law, Jewish law, legal moralism, legal reasoning, moral equality, peacekeeping, remote warfare, the right to rebellion, and the umbrella clause. The second edition of Black`s Law Dictionary (1910) is now in the public domain and can be read online for free (see External links below). However, to use it online, you need to reach a certain age. The dictionary applies to legal theoretical terms and many basic legal terms in terms of general meaning. References to case law will be incomplete for modern purposes, and the use of legal language in court cases and in the courtroom has changed over time with changes in law and legal culture.   The content is excellent and I think the app is well designed. But much of the screen at the top and bottom is only black and therefore not used for content. If this were corrected, the reading experience would be far superior. For more than a century, The Black`s Law Dictionary has been the gold standard for the language of law, and today ® it is the most cited law book in the world. By editor-in-chief Bryan A. Garner, the 10th edition is the most comprehensive legal dictionary ever published. It contains more than 50,000 terms, including more than 16,000 new definitions. With clarity and rigor, it defines more than 55,000 words and expressions related to law and records their historical and contemporary nuances. About 3,500 terms are new to this edition, including self-hacking, contempt for the policeman, doxing, flash rob, khakiocracy, mugshot blackmail, porch hacker, skeuomorph, synthetic identity theft, and twocking. What you have here is quite simple – a digital version of the already indispensable Black`s Law Dictionary. Features with ease – Searches are a breeze and often include links to related or alternative terms.
Pronunciation assistance is exceptionally helpful. Overall, you have an almost five-star app that lacks a few features – unfortunately, most of them are pretty serious omissions for a professional, especially considering that this app comes with a price tag of $55.• The app has absolutely no way to adjust the brightness in the app. In the darker settings, this app is dazzling white. Most reading-oriented applications (Kindle, Nook, iBooks) have included such functionality for a long time.• Physical page numbers for definitions, while not necessary, are extremely useful for citation.• Extremely important information that is omitted from the Black`s Law Dictionary product line as a whole, but could easily have been implemented here, is which black band a particular definition comes from.• The app does not sync bookmarks and history across all devices. This is not the most urgent issue, but it would have been helpful. • By the way, the app icon is terrible. Black`s Law Dictionary is the most widely used legal dictionary in the United States. Henry Campbell Black (1860-1927) was the author of the first two editions of the dictionary. The U.S. Supreme Court has cited the dictionary as a secondary legal authority in many Supreme Court cases.  However, it remains a shortened dictionary with pronunciation instructions and lightweight reference material. I have taught law at the college level for several years, which is a great tool for finding reliable definitions of legal terms at a discount of over 50% compared to the hardcover version.
I warned students not to look for legal definitions on the internet because who knows what you will get. Blacks is the industry standard. There is really no substitute. I`d be happy to pay $60 for an updated version, which is more likely to be twice as high for an updated version of hardcover If you`re using an issue that was up to date when you were in law school, you`re outdated. If you think that a dictionary is mostly useful as a gateway, you have not gone through the pages of this 11th edition. Once you`ve done that, you`ll have a hard time lying down.
